We are jazz bums at North Beach's hippest dive!
Dark passions! In an underworld!
No cover. Full bar. Cheap booze!
Museum of memorabilia (collected by Specs himself),
great bartender, no annoying TV,
and best of all, live jazz and latin standards
played by your pals, the usual bums:
Gerry on drums, AnnaMarie on percussion,
John Groves on piano, me on bass, and
your favorite diva Valeriana (Divaleriana?)

Last month we protected you from ukuleles.
This month it's trombones.
You can count on Specs for safety from terrors near and far!
You'll hear Gerry on drums, Annamarie on percussion,
John Groves on piano, me on bass, and your favorite
diva Valeriana (Divaleriana?) singing her heart out as always.
And no fallout.
(Thanks to Prof. W. Road for passing along this cartoon gem. I think.)

Sunday evening at North Beach's hippest dive!
(Technically it's Chinatown but we know better.)
We are just south of the intersection of Broadway and Columbus,
up a tiny alley next to pricey Tosca and across from jam-packed
Vesuvio and Ferlinghetti's reknowned City Lights bookstore.
Rated one of America's 15 best bars by Esquire magazine.
My friend Rich Young (who is neither) sent me this gem:
Guitar
Center Institutes Five-Day Waiting Period on Ukuleles

"We here at WUS are disgusted by Guitar Center's trampling on the freedom of musical expression. The right to ukulele ownership was passed down from our stepfathers," declared Topherson. "Mr. Japinga, let me be clear: You can take my K-1 T6 Koa 6-string tenor when you pry it from my double-layer cotton canvas tote bag."
I say, thank heavens! And I also say, you'll be safe at Specs — no ukeleles there.
And you'll get to hear Rich on drums (that explains a lot), Annamarie on percussion, John Groves on piano, me on bass, and your favorite diva Valeriana (Divaleriana?) singing her heart out as always. And no background checks.
No cover. Full bar. Cheap booze!
Museum of memorabilia (collected by Specs himself),
great bartender, no annoying TV,

Our pal Rich Kalman pens:
Are you talking about the "new"
Dan or the old Dan I "knew"
Not long after I knew you?
That Dan, he's forever new.
Now I know you know the Dan that I knew
And you're just knowing that I know Dan too.
That makes us all new.
Make sense? Nuu?
So maybe I'll see you at Specs with Dan Keller some time?
That will be new too!

Misogyny and Other Miss-Fits!
Lyrics from many jazz and blues tunes reflect less than ideal,
(and in some cases, overly ideal) impressions of the female sex.
With humor, mitigated by just the right amount of annoyance, we
will have fun with these tunes and many others as we traverse
the landscape of women in song. The fantastic jazz tune
Girl Talk, (lyrics by Bobby Troup, music by Neal Hefti),
and Bacharach's Wives and Lovers are just a few songs
featured in Kay's misogyny set.
A portion of the proceeds will go to womens rights organizations.
